US Utilities and planning authorities now forecast 166 GW of new electricity demand by 2030, more than six times what they projected just three years ago, according to Grid Strategies' analysis of FERC filings. Data centers, manufacturing and electrification are all contributing. Customers are already feeling the cost. At the same time, rooftop solar, batteries, EVs and load control devices are being deployed at pace. Put those two forces together and the challenge becomes clear.

As autumn sets in and heating loads climb, millions of American households are opening their electricity bills with a familiar unease. The average US residential rate now sits near 18.4 cents per kilowatt-hour, up around 25% since 2022, adding close to $400 a year to the typical bill. By one 2026 estimate, one in six households is behind on their utility payments. The pressure is real, and it isn't going away. So, the more useful question isn't whether bills are rising, but what can be done to maximize the value for the consumer.

It is a fixture in their event’s calendar, a full day they make time for every year as the programme reaches well beyond New Zealand and was all about AI technology, its chances and learnings. Ali Adams of ChristchurchNZ set the tone, making the case that the city is deliberately backing a focused set of sectors, cleantech and energy among them, where it can compete on the world stage. That is exactly the space we work in.

It turned into one of the most rewarding activities we’ve done on campus. Meet the Team: Abner Edgar

In July, CrescoNet welcomed Abner Edgar to the team as an engineering intern. Abner is currently completing a Master of Engineering Studies (endorsed in Renewable Energy) at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, where he is a recipient of the Orion Master’s Energy Scholarship, having earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Indonesia. He brings a genuine curiosity for how electrical and energy systems work, along with a growing passion for renewable energy. We sat down for a quick chat to hear about his journey from Indonesia to Christchurch, what drew him to CrescoNet, and what he gets up to when he isn’t deep in the technical detail.
